Sorry, 'Nashville' fans, it's over for real this time: CMT cancels show after 6 seasons

Updated

The curtain is finally closing -- for real -- on "Nashville."

The fan-favorite show found new life on CMT after ABC scrapped after four seasons in 2016. And while many were devoted fans to the show's most recent two seasons, it apparently wasn't enough for Viacom execs.

“All of us on 'Nashville' are so incredibly grateful to the show’s fans, who convinced CMTto give us a chance to keep telling the story of these remarkable characters,” series executive producer Marshall Herskovitz said. “And we want to return the favor with a final season that celebrates all the joys and passions, twists and turns — and amazing music! — that made ‘Nashville’ such an exciting journey for the last six years.”

The show stars Hayden Panettiere, Clare Bowen, Charles Esten, Kaitlin Doubleday, Jonathan Jackson, Chris Carmack, Sam Palladio, Maisy Stella and Lennon Stella. Connie Britton previously starred on the show but left during its fifth season, much to fans' distress.

Fans were quick to lament news of the cancellation on Twitter. "Call me crazy, but they could cancel Grey’s Anatomy tomorrow if it meant Nashville wasn’t ending," one tweeted.
