Here's where Cardi B's name actually comes from

Unless you've been living in a cave, you're familiar with Cardi B, the current reigning queen of hip-hop music.

The Bronx-born Dominican rapper, whose Rolling Stone cover debuted on Monday, made history earlier this month when her hit single "Bodak Yellow" dethroned Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" as No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

The move made Cardi B the second female rapper to ever top the chart with a solo hit since Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" occupied the throne in 1998, and only the fifth female rapper to top the Hot 100 chart in history.

But amid the rapper's wild rise to fame, we had never once stopped to question where her stage name, Cardi B, actually comes from -- until now.

While wrapping up her performing at Bacardi's "Dress To Be Free" Halloween party in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday night, Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, reminded the crowd that her nickname actually stems from the iconic rum brand.

Cardi B also discussed the story behind her moniker during an appearance on The Wendy Williams Show in July 2017. When the host asked where her nickname was derived from, the rapper replied, "my sister's name is Hennessy, so everybody used to be like 'Bacardi' to me...then I shortened it to Cardi B, the 'B' stands for whatever depending on the day...beautiful or bully."

Cardi B arrived at Monday night's event in true Cardi B fashion – lighting up the red carpet donning a “Bruella” de Vil costume, including a black and white fur coat and matching hairdo, long red gloves, a black embellished bustier and a long cigarette holder.

Before she left the stage, Cardi B encouraged guests to dress however they want and be whoever they want, which is what she said Bacardi's #DresstobeFree movement means to her.

Sadly, neither her new 8-karat rock – nor her new fiancée – made an appearance at the event, as the former is currently getting resized.
