‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 14 sees another series regular depart

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched the Oct. 26 episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” entitled “Danger Zone.”

The episode that was set to reveal what happened to Megan (Abigail Spencer) a decade ago when she was kidnapped in combat and presumed dead ended up delivering an extra emotional wallop with the departure of Riggs (Martin Henderson) from the show.

Flashing back 10 years, it was revealed that not only had Riggs cheated on Megan, but she also cheated on him. But as she later points out to her brother Owen (Kevin McKidd), everyone makes mistakes and can choose to be happy. After experiencing so much time apart from her loved ones, she clearly has a renewed sense of what that happiness looks like.

For Megan that happiness is being back by the ocean. So she, Farouk (Bardia Seiri) and Riggs move to Los Angeles to give it a go as being a proper family.

“I loved that we were able to give Riggs a happy ending worthy of his character and talent,” executive producer Shonda Rhimes said in a statement sent to Variety.

And although this marks the end for Henderson on Rhimes’ medical drama, she promised that she was not closing the door on their relationship or potential additional collaborations. “He has been part of the Shondaland family since the pilot of ‘Inside the Box,’ and he will always be family. I can’t wait to find a new project to work with him on in the future,” she continued.

Henderson is not the only cast member to leave the series of late. Jason George’s role is being reduced as he prepares to head to the firefighter spinoff, while Jerrika Hinton and Marika Dominczyk both exited ahead of this 14th season.

“Grey’s Anatomy” is on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
