Gina Rodriguez on making her family a priority, being starstruck and Kate Hudson's 'dope' Halloween party

Updated

At a recent party in her new home, Gina Rodriguez brought together two people from different parts of her life to form an unusual connection.

"My cousin is a doula, and she's now going to be the doula for my friend that is pregnant -- and they met at my house!" she told me excitedly over the phone. "That just recently happened, and it was so special. My cousin is the best, and this is going to be her fourth or fifth birth. It's so cool that I could bring them together."

That ability to bring people together -- especially under the roof of the first home she's ever bought -- is something that genuinely thrills the "Jane the Virgin" actress, and it's what she deems the marker of a good party.

"I want to feel as though I'm successfully bringing people together to meet each other," she explained. "You have your work groups and your family and your friends, and when someone in my family gets to meet new friends of mine, it warms my heart. I love the crossing of different worlds."

In celebration of her newfound ability to host people at her first home, Rodriguez partnered with Stella Artois -- the "only beer" she drinks -- for the latest incarnation of its Host One To Remember campaign to "take this moment in time and celebrate and hold it."

"It's been such a sanctuary for me," she said of her new home. "It's big enough to host people, but it's not too big where I can't clean it myself."

Though she loves hosting friends, it's her family that Rodriguez says she's "making a priority" as she embarks on this new chapter. Whether it's having her nieces and nephews over for an arts and crafts party on a Sunday or making use of her new big screen TV for a fight night viewing, the 33-year-old is on a simple mission: Create moments to remember.

"I need to make memories," she explained. "And I'm making that a priority."

As she continues to have people over for celebrations -- yes, including "Jane the Virgin" viewing parties -- Rodriguez is looking back at memorable parties she's attended for inspiration. One such soirée? Kate Hudson's annual Halloween party.

"After we did 'Deepwater Horizon' together, we fell in love," Rodriguez gushed about Hudson. "She's the baddest B. She's so dope, and such a woman's woman. She's an uplifter, and I love her. Her party was just amazing. I was like, 'This is how you throw a party,' and I would love to throw a party like that one day."

Having been to so many star-studded events -- from Hudson's Halloween bash to award show after parties and beyond -- I had to know: When was the last time that Rodriguez got starstruck? Turns out, it was only a month ago.

"I saw Riz Ahmed and Issa Rae in the back of the Emmys," she said with a rush. "I was like, 'Yo, dawg! You two! You better work!' They were so loving and fantastic. They're both amazing and I'm so proud of everything they're doing."

It's that genuine interest, investment and celebration of the people around her that sets Rodriguez apart. Want more proof? Before we finished our interview, the Golden Globe-winning star took the time to ask me a question.

"Who's your favorite person you've interviewed?" she asked as she drove through the Hollywood Hills. "I totally Instagram stalked you."

Now that is a moment to remember.
