Jane Fonda says she is 'ashamed' she didn't speak up earlier on Weinstein rumors

Jane Fonda, in a new interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour set to air Friday, said she knew of the allegations against Harvey Weinstein a year ago, and is "ashamed" she didn't say anything at the time.

She was told of Weinstein's misconduct by Rosanna Arquette, who is one of the many women who has since come forward to speak out against the movie mogul since separate reports from TheNew York Times and New Yorker broke detailing claims of sexual harassment and rape against him.

"I found out about Harvey a year ago and I'm ashamed I didn't say anything back then," she told Amanpour. When Amanpour asked why she didn't speak up at the time, the actress said: "I was not that bold. I guess it hadn't happened to me and I didn't feel it was my place."

Fonda, 79, said she only met Weinstein once, but didn't have a negative experience with him. She said she suspected it was because "I was old, and Harvey goes for young because that's more vulnerable."

She added she's glad the accusations have come to light. "I'm glad it's coming out, I'm so proud of those fellow actors that are speaking up. I know that it has taken a long time. It is a very, very, very hard thing to do. You don't get anything out of it as the person who has been victimized but it is important that it come out."

However, she cautions against any belief that this issue is unique to Hollywood. "Let's not think that this is some unique, horrific... this goes on all the time, this male entitlement in Hollywood and everywhere — in offices and businesses all over the world, in bars, in restaurants, in stores women are assaulted, abused, harassed," she said.
