Lin-Manuel Miranda explains his Trump 'straight to hell' tweet

Lin-Manuel Miranda insists his declaration that President Trump is going "straight to hell" wasn't an impulsive decision — but rather the only way he could describe what he was feeling.

The "Hamilton" creator made headlines last weekend when he prognosticated about the President's eternal fate in a tweet responding to Trump's tweets criticizing Puerto Rican officials in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria decimating the island.

"Its unprecedented language from me," Miranda said of his tweet in an interview on the "Today" show Friday. "But it's unprecedented to have the president of the United States attack the victims of a natural disaster."

"That was not an impulsive tweet," he continued. "Those were the only words I had left, and I'm a guy who puts words together for a living."

Miranda, 37, fired off the fuming tweet on Saturday after Trump published a series of posts regarding Puerto Rico. Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island, left it without power and forced citizens to search for food, water and supplies.

"Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help," Trump tweeted Saturday. "They … want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job."

Miranda was one of several celebrities who condemned Trump's approach to the situation, joining a list that also included Kim Kardashian, George Takei, John Legend and Questlove.

Legend tweeted at the time: "Trump continues to dominate the s--ttiest president ever competition."

In Friday's interview with "Today," Miranda said his tweet against Trump was especially attention-grabbing since he typically tries to be the "silver lining in the world, because the world is how it is.

"Those were the only words I had to express my feelings on that," he reiterated in the interview.

Miranda, who has deep familial roots to Puerto Rico, released a new song, "Almost Like Praying," on Thursday night to benefit the victims of the hurricane.

The song is already number one on iTunes.
