Carson Daly returns to 'Today,' shares heart-wrenching 'goodbye' letter from late mother

Just days after she died, Carson Daly shared a heartbreaking goodbye letter from his late mother Pattie Daly Carruso on Wednesday.

“My sister & I just discovered this ‘goodbye’ letter Mom left in her desk drawer,” Daly wrote in a caption for a photo of the letter on his Instagram. “It was written in the thick of her breast cancer battle. She clearly thought she might not make it. We never knew. This was 1998. She lived almost 20 years longer. She survived and thrived. Never give up.”

The uplifting message of the letter was offset by Daly’s emotional return to the “Today Show” on Wednesday following his mother’s death in September following a heart attack.

“I’m doing okay, I’m healing. Still in shock — really rough loss. Nobody likes that phone to ring in the middle of the night to get that call,” he said to co-hosts Matt Lauer, Al Roker and Hoda Kotb.

Daly also offered condolences to those affected by the tragedy in Las Vegas over the weekend, saying he felt their pain.

“Of course, my heart re-breaks for everybody in Las Vegas, who just lost so many people,” he said. “They also got that call for somebody that they loved [who] was suddenly taken away from them. It’s an incredible pain, so my thoughts and prayers certainly go out to everybody in Vegas.”
