Megyn Kelly reveals aspect of FOX News job 'was not true to my soul'

Megyn Kelly is opening up further about her decision to leave FOX News and head to NBC News, and there were a lot of factors that went into her high-profile network switch.

In a new interview with People, the host of "Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly" reveals that her family was a huge contributing factor in her ultimate decision. During her time at FOX News, the television personality simply wasn't able to spend enough time with her children.

"Two of my kids were in school during the exact hours that I was at home," the mother of Yates, 8, Yardley, 6, and Thatcher, 3, revealed. "They would get back at 3:30 p.m. just as I’d be leaving to do 'The Kelly File.' I hadn’t tucked them into bed on a weeknight in three years."

Not only that, but Kelly, who had been at FOX News for 13 years, also realized that what she was doing at the conservative-leaning cable news channel didn't fulfill her in the way she had previously thought. At the end of the day, she wasn't being true to herself.

"I'm not a political animal and I never have been," she said to People. "The subject matter was not true to my soul."

So, as her contract at FOX was nearing its end earlier this year and as rumors of a massive bidding war swirled around her, Kelly was at a crossroads: Was she to stay at FOX News, where she ultimately wasn't very happy, or head to NBC, where she would be given not one but two of her own programs?

"It was time to do a gut check, to make sure I was happy and doing what I'm supposed to," she reflected. "The answer was clearly no. It was time to make a change."

And now? She's happier than she's been in a long time, "less stressed" and "less distant" from her family. Though ratings for "Sunday Night" have been less than stellar, the show is undoubtedly garnering more buzz than most Sunday night news programs, and Kelly has been able to mix politics with social issues and entertainment. She's interviewed Vladimir Putin, the Kardashian family and a handful of people in between.

"Megyn Kelly Today" premieres on Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. EST on NBC.
