Steve Harvey finally explains that secret meeting with Trump

President Trump is a noted fan of morning television -- but he caused quite a stir by meeting with daytime TV’s Steve Harvey earlier this year.

Now, in a revealing new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harvey is speaking out about his controversial sit-down with Trump, who was President-elect at the time, and the backlash that followed.

After talking about golf for 20 minutes -- Harvey says he told Trump he campaigned for Hillary Clinton, before noting:

“But now that you're here, you're the 45th president and I'm going to help you.”

When asked how he was going to help, Harvey proposed using Housing and Urban Development funds to turn schools that had been closed into vision centers to teach STEM, computers and coding.

He says Trump connected him with his head of HUD, Ben Carson within minutes, and they hope to announce the first vision center by the end of 2017.

Harvey -- whose new talk show, "Steve," debuted in early September -- explains it actually started because of his relationship with former President Obama.

He took the meeting because Obama’s transition team said he wanted to encourage dialogue.

As for whether he and Trump have stayed in contact, Harvey notes, “No, I haven't talked to him since.”
