New Kermit the Frog voice actor's debut gets mixed reviews

Matt Vogel is quickly learning just how difficult being green really is.

Muppet fans are having mixed feelings about the voice actor, who officially replaced controversial puppeteer Steve Whitmire in July.

Vogel made his debut as Kermit the Frog on Monday, in a video titled "Muppet Thought of the Week."

He delivered an inspiring message about the many directions life can take a person after a brief introduction by Uncle Deadly, another one of Vogel's characters.

"Dreams are how we figure out where we want to go. Life is how we get there," he says in the short clip. "I'm headed this way."

Fans flocked to the YouTube comments section and social media to weigh in on Vogel's portrayal of the iconic character. Some praised his performance, suggesting he sounded just like Whitmire and Jim Henson, while others were utterly unimpressed.

"Uh….. Matt's Kermit sounds like Ernie from Sesame Street," one displeased commenter noted.

"He doesn't sound that bad. He doesn't sound that good either," another said.

Vogel's taking over the role of Kermit following Whitmire's firing. His predecessor was let go in October after more than 20 years of playing the legendary frog.

The studio alleged that Whitmire was fired over "repeated unacceptable business conduct" that spanned "a period of many years."

Henson's children spoke out amid claims from Whitmire to the contrary, revealing that they weren't keen on the direction he had taken their father's character creation.

"Steve performed Kermit as a bitter, angry, depressed, victim. Worst of all, in the past few years he had not been funny or fun," Cheryl Henson said in a Facebook post screen-grabbed by Deadline.

She also said his firing was "long overdue."
