Kathy Griffin makes big reveal about the status of her friendship with Anderson Cooper

Comedian Kathy Griffin has publicly apologized multiple times for posing with a bloodied mask of Donald Trump, but says not everyone has accepted her apology.

In an interview with The Cut, Griffin says that the photo has not only cost her jobs, but also her 20-year friendship with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

Both right and left united in condemning Griffin's picture earlier this year, and ultimately CNN, where she had co-hosted a New Year's Eve special with Cooper for 10 years, fired her.

She says other CNN employees called to check on her, but Cooper did not speak to the comedian until Aug. 10 -- 3 months after the scandal happened -- though he publicly condemned the photos on Twitter the week of their release.

"For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in," he tweeted at the time. "It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate."

Anderson Cooper also spoke out on the issue during an appearance on friend Andy Cohen's "Watch What Happens Live."

"She's incredibly funny, and a lot of people love her and I think she'll bounce back from this," he said in July. In a separate interview he added, "CNN made the decision not to bring her back. I had nothing to do with it, but I certainly understand why they made that decision."

According to The Cut, the lack of personal communication left Griffin disappointed and, when Cooper finally reached out to Griffin, she took matters into her own hands.

"The fact that Cooper was telling people publicly they were friends, while not checking in with her, hurt Griffin deeply. When he finally reached out to her in a series of text messages, she told him their friendship was over.

A source close to Cooper tells me that Cooper was 'shocked and upset by the photo, and while he was not ready to talk to her personally about it, he still considered her to be a friend, and was publicly supportive when asked about the controversy.'"
