Broadway-bound 'Mean Girls' musical sets cast

The eagerly anticipated Mean Girls stage musical has found its cast.

Premiering at Washington, D.C.'s National Theatre in a pre-Broadway fall engagement set to run Oct. 31-Dec. 3, the show features a book by Tina Fey, adapted from her screenplay for the cult 2004 comedy about a high-school clique of popular girls knocked down from their dictatorial pedestal.

Lorne Michaels will produce alongside Broadway veteran Stuart Thompson. The original score is by Fey's husband Jeff Richmond, whose songs have been heard on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, with lyrics by Nell Benjamin, best known for the Legally Blonde musical. Direction and choreography are by Tony winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Aladdin).

Relative newcomer Erika Henningsen has been cast as Cady Heron, the home-schooled student new to the jungle of high-school social hierarchies, played by Lindsay Lohan in the film. Henningsen was seen recently in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables.

Stepping into Rachel McAdams' shoes as Regina George, Queen Bee of the tyrannical "Plastics" is Taylor Louderman, whose Broadway credits include Bring It On and a current stint in Kinky Boots. Kerry Butler, a Tony nominee for Xanadu, will appear as math teacher Ms. Norbury, the role played by Fey onscreen.

Rounding out the cast as Regina's sidekick frenemies will be Ashley Park (The King and I, Sunday in the Park With George) and Kate Rockwell (Bring It On, Rock of Ages). Barrett Wilbert Weed (Heathers: The Musical) will play Janis, the goth outsider originated onscreen by Lizzy Caplan.

Also joining the cast are Grey Henson, Kyle Selig, Cheech Manohar and Rick Younger.

While no theater and dates for the show's New York debut have been confirmed, depending on its critical reception, Mean Girls is expected to bounce directly into a spring Broadway berth, making it eligible for consideration for the 2018 Tony Awards.
