Christopher Nolan had no idea how famous Harry Styles was when he cast him in ‘Dunkirk’

One of the biggest draws for Christopher Nolan's upcoming film "Dunkirk" is the casting of One Direction singer Harry Styles. However, Nolan and star Mark Rylance both admitted his casting had nothing to do with his fame.

In fact, both had no idea how famous the musician actually was.

According to the Associated Press, both Nolan and Rylance learned about Styles later from the young women in their life.

"I don't think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was," Nolan said. "I mean, my daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn't really that aware of it."

Rylance, who has won an Oscar and three Tonys, said that his 11-year-old niece was more excited about him getting to work with Styles in the World War II drama than any of his other achievements.

"She was just more excited than anything I've ever done because I was going to be acting with Harry Styles," said Rylance. "I went up in her estimation. I won the Harry!"

But if Styles wasn't casted for his previous fame, it must've been his talent, right? Nolan said he cast Styles because he was best for the part. Styles plays a British soldier trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk. It's unclear the extent of his role — also because the cast is so large — but in previous clips, he's been seen swimming to safely and saying "Somebody has got to get off so that the rest of us can live" on a boat.

"So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table."
