Anthony Mason will anchor ‘CBS Evening News’ on interim basis

Anthony Mason will anchor "CBS Evening News" on an interim basis until a permanent replacement for Scott Pelley is named, TheWrap has confirmed from a source close to the situation.

Pelley, who was abruptly replaced on Wednesday evening, had been the anchor and managing editor of the network's nightly newscast since 2011, when he took over for Katie Couric. He will return to the newscast for a chance to say goodbye to viewers, according to a CBS News source.

Pelley is currently on assignment for "60 Minutes" and has not been on CBS News for several days. News that he is being replaced broke abruptly on Wednesday night, first by the New York Post, but CBS didn't formally announce anything.
