Jane Fonda once drank moonshine with Dolly Parton and was hammered for 10 days

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have been friends on and off-screen for nearly four decades. The longtime pals and current Grace and Fankie co-stars swung by The Late Late Show on Wednesday night (May 3) to plug the upcoming fourth season of their Netflix series and to share some tall tales from their storied past.

One of the best was Fonda's recollection of the time she went on tour as an opening act for the pair's 9 to 5 costar Dolly Parton. Asked what that experience was like, the always loquacious Fonda was struck dumb for a few seconds as she attempted to collect her thoughts. "Well, it's hard to say because early on... well, you know how the trip started?" she said. "She had me fly to Nashville and have me sing backup for her at the Grand Ole Opry."

Tomlin, always quick with a quip, asked if the audience even knew who Hollywood royalty Fonda was. "No, they didn't know who I was," replied Fonda. "I wouldn't be here alive today if they did." That, believe it or not, was not even the most bizarre part of Jane's Music City getaway. "But then we went on her tour bus and one of the first stops was at her cousin's still in the Ozarks because she wanted me to know what really good white lightning was," Fonda continued, explaining to Corden that Parton's cousin filtered his moonshine an extra time for more goodness.

When in the Ozarks... Fonda plugged her thumb in the jug and took a swig. "I didn't know I was drunk!" she said. "I was drunk for 10 days and didn't know it."
