Abigail Breslin explains why she never reported her rape

Abigail Breslin has a message to share: Reported rapes are not the only rapes that count.

After taking to Instagram to reveal she had been sexually assaulted in a bid to speak out during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Scream Queens star is responding to a comment on her post which said, "Reported rapes are the only rapes that count."

"I didn't report [my rape] because of many reasons," the 21-year-old began in a post on her social media account Tuesday. "I didn't want to view myself as a 'victim' so I suppressed it and pretended it never happened."

Breslin explained that she was in complete shock and total denial, and was also in a relationship with her rapist at the time and feared putting her family and friends through the pain of knowing what happened.

"I was diagnosed with PTSD a year and a half ago," she wrote. "I have made a lot of progress since the event occurred, but I won't pretend it isn't something I struggle with. I still have flashbacks, I still get nightmares, I still jump when somebody touches me unexpectedly, even if it's my best friend tapping me on the shoulder."

She continued, "To say that rapes reported are the only rapes that count, contributes to the ideology that survivors of unreported rape don't matter. It's unfair, untrue and unhelpful.... Unreported rapes count. Reported rapes count. End of the story."

When Breslin first took to Instagram to break the silence on her assault, she posted a definition of consent that read, "You are not obligated to have sex with someone that you're in a relationship with. Dating is not consent. Marriage is not consent." She captioned the post, "I knew my assailant. #SexualAssaultAwarenessMonth #breakthesilence."

The actress, who is set to star in ABC's upcoming remake of Dirty Dancing, has received an outpouring of support on social media.
