John Legend never watched Disney movies as a kid

Updated

A ten-time Grammy winner and now an Oscar winner to boot, John Legend has packed a lifetime into 38 years. But there's one experience he never really had, and he's looking forward to finally enjoying it with wife Chrissy Teigen and their one-year-old daughter Luna: Watching Disney and Pixar flicks.

"From my childhood, oh my. I've never really watched them -- now I will," Legend told AOL Entertainment. "I haven't really watched many animated films, ever. Even as a kid, we didn't get to go to the movies a lot. I stayed home and watched cartoons. But now we'll get to get more into it since I have a kid."

Fatherhood played a role in Legend's decision to lend his talents to "Rainbow Crow," an illuminating virtual reality experience created by Baobab Studios. Legend voices the titular character for the series, which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.

"You know, I think between this and 'Beauty and the Beast,' I feel like I'm doing a few things that my daughter can watch now," Legend said. "Baobab is really on the forefront of this technology and storytelling medium, and the chance to work with them was exciting."

Legend gave the VR experience a spin during a party at the Boom Boom Room at the top of the The Standard Hotel. Teigen, looking stunning as ever in an ivory Mestiza New York mini dress and Jimmy Choos, joined him for the picture-perfect event overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Throughout the night, Teigen Snapchatted her view from the penthouse, musing, "Incredible. God, New York, you are beautiful."

In order to watch, users strap on a large (but comfortable!) headset for the 360-degree story. Guests all had the opportunity to try out the animated adventure, written and directed by Eric Darnell, who's also the creative mind behind the "Madagascar" franchise.

"For being a relative newcomer compared to someone like Gene Hackman or Woody Allen, who I've worked with in the past, [John] is amazing," Darnell said. "He just brought so much enthusiasm that's really uncharacteristic for many actors that I've worked with, no matter how talented they are."

Outside of their Tribeca appearances, Legend and Teigen spent a fun weekend exploring the city -- and Legend revealed their go-to Manhattan brunch spot: "Today we just walked around Soho and the Bowery area. We went to Frank, one of our favorite restaurants, and got out brunch there -- the baked eggs ragu, which we always get," Legend said. (Dying to try the dish -- and maybe spot the couple? Frank is located in East Village.)

"We do a lot of staying home on the couch, but it's nice to get out, especially in New York," Legend said. "We used to live here for a long time, and we miss it a bit."
