Swimwear designer comes under fire for fat shaming Amy Schumer

South Shore Swimwear owner and designer Dana Duggan caused a stir on the internet after she criticized Amy Schumer's swimsuit cover via a comment on InStyle Magazine's Instagram account.

InStyle Magazine posted an image of the May Beauty issue's cover showing the comedian in a white swimsuit with the caption, "I was always really confident."

However, Duggan — who was writing from the South Shore Swimwear's official Instagram account — didn't agree with the cover model selection.

"Come on now! You could not find anyone better for this cover? Not everyone should be in a swimsuit [vomit emoji]," she wrote.

And it didn't stop there.

When faced with criticism over the comment, which many described as "fat shaming," Duggan lashed out at other users. One response to the claim said that it wasn't fat shaming because Schumer "fat shames herself in her comedy routine."

There were a couple users who agreed with Duggan (to which the account replied "thank you!!"), but for the most part, the consensus was with InStyle's decision and the right for women of any size to wear a swimsuit.

Duggan defended the comments in a statement made to the Huffington Post, where she called upon the First Amendment's right to free speech.

"I appreciate the free press. It's called Freedom of Speech," she said. "I can have my opinion and you can have yours. I'm tired of the media and publications trying to push the FAT agenda. It's not healthy and it's not pretty. What is wrong with featuring healthy and fit cover models?"

Later, Duggan claimed the author of the Huffington Post article, Jamie Feldman "lied" and misrepresented her comments in another Instagram caption.

"I NEVER CALLED AMY SCHUMER A PIG and I NEVER CALLED HER FAT. I simply commented 'You could not find anyone better for this cover?'," she wrote.

Many of the commenters called out Duggan for her statements, reaffirming a woman's right to wear whatever she wants.

"Anyone who wants to wear a swimsuit should feel able to and it's no one else's business," said one user.

"Not very smart to comment something like that," wrote another. "There are so many great people in the world. All those great people don't all look the same, we are all different in our own ways. We own our bodies and if you don't like that well we will see how that works out for you."
