Prince's ex-wife on losing their baby together: 'I don't think he ever got over it'

Six days after welcoming their son, Amiir, into the world, Prince and then-wife Mayte Garcia had to say goodbye to him forever.

The baby, born Oct. 16 1996, had been diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, was the only child Prince ever had -- and the loss was something that, Garcia says, neither of them ever fully recovered from.

"I don't think he ever got over it," Garcia told People. "I don't know how anybody can get over it. I know I haven't."

Garcia, who was married to the late singer for four years from 1996 until 2000, details the heartbreaking ordeal of losing their only son in her revealing upcoming memoir, "The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince," out April 4.

The couple was elated when they found out Garcia was pregnant, but became worried for their baby's health when Garcia, then 22, started bleeding. Prince refused to let his wife take medicine recommended by doctors, so the couple prayed instead. "We know you won't allow this child to be harmed," the singer allegedly pleaded.

After giving birth to Amiir, Garcia remembers her husband's look of "pure joy" turning to "pure terror" when "they held the baby up to those harsh [hospital] lights."

"Pfeiffer syndrome type 2 is a genetic disorder that causes skeletal and systematic abnormalities. The premature fusing of the bones in the skull, sometimes resulting in 'cloverleaf skull,' in which the eyes are outside the sockets," she wrote in her memoir. "The fusion of bones in the hands and feet causing a webbed or pawlike appearance [...] I learned all of this later."

Prince died of an overdose at Paisley Park on April 21, 2016.
