Lily Collins pens letter of forgiveness for dad Phil Collins: 'We can't rewrite the past'

Lily Collins is offering an olive branch to her famous father, Phil Collins.

The 27-year-old actress pens a letter in her new memoir, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me, where she talks about coming to terms with the 66-year-old musician "not being the dad" she expected. Lily was the only child from her father's second marriage to Jill Tavelman. At age five, her parents split, and Lily and her mother moved to Los Angeles, while Phil -- who has four children from other relationships -- resided in Switzerland.

"I forgive you for not always being there when I needed," she writes in an excerpt from the letter obtained byDaily Mail. "I forgive the mistakes you made. And although it may seem like it's too late, it's not. There's still so much time to move forward."

"We all make choices and, although I don't excuse some of yours, at the end of the day we can't rewrite the past," she continues. "I'm learning how to accept your actions and vocalize how they made me feel. I accept and honor the sadness and anger I felt toward the things you did or didn't do, did or didn't give me."

Lily also addresses her father's divorce from third wife, Orianne Cevey, in 2008, and how it affected her personally. "Not only did I start viewing myself differently physically, but I began limiting my happiness by controlling my eating habits," the actress -- who's spoken out about having an eating disorder in the past -- reveals. "I couldn't handle the pain and confusion surrounding my dad's divorce, and I was having a hard time balancing being a teenager with pursuing two different grownup careers."

She adds, "Many of my deepest insecurities stem from these issues with my dad."
