While Matt Damon's "Manchester by the Sea" is an Oscar front-runner to win big at this year's awards, the superstar actor shared with AOL which film impacted him the most, and whom he hopes wins big at the 89th Academy Awards.

"For me, without question, the movie that absolutely wrecked me this year was 'Moonlight,'" the actor revealed. "I've seen it twice already and I was just floored by it."

"Moonlight" captures the journey of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world -- and his identity -- while growing up in a rough Miami neighborhood.

"I think [it's] probably one of my favorite films in -- not just this year -- but in quite some time," Damon said.

"Moonlight" is up for eight awards including best picture, director (Barry Jenkins) and supporting actors Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris.

What makes this film stand out is that it's not just about a black boy living in a drug-riddled, inner-city neighborhood, but the discovery that he is gay. "Moonlight" takes you through three different stages of Chiron's life, with each part showing how he has worked his way through multiple identities to find out which one he really is.

"Manchester by the Sea," which was produced by Damon, is up for six awards and will go head-to-head with "Moonlight" in best picture, director (Kenneth Lonergan) and supporting actors Lucas Hedges and Michelle Williams.

The film is centered around an uncle (played by Casey Affleck) whose world is shaken when he's asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father -- his brother -- dies.

While both films are expected to win big at the Academy Awards, the real question is whether either film can beat the fan-favorite musical "La La Land" for best picture.

The ceremony, which will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, airs Feb. 26 on ABC.
