Matthew McConaughey on Donald Trump: Americans 'don't have a choice' but to embrace him

Matthew McConaughey spoke out about the reaction to Donald Trump's first few weeks as president during a recent interview with ChannelFi.

The 47-year-old actor was frank when revealing his feelings about the current "divisive" climate in the United States, but it's unclear when exactly the since-deleted interview took place.

"Well, they don't have a choice now," McConaughey said about Americans' unwillingness to accept Trump as president. "He's our president. And it's very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we've ever had."

The interview was a promotional one for his new film, "Gold," but the interviewer wasn't afraid to guide the conversation towards a more political tone and subject matter.

"At the same time, it's time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years," he added. "Even those that most strongly may disagree with his principals or things he's said and done -- which, is another thing, we'll see what he does compared to what he had said -- no matter how much you even disagree along the way, it's time to think about how constructive can you be. He's our president for the next four years -- at least -- president of the United States."

McConaughey isn't the first major Hollywood figure to share his feelings on President Trump, of course, but he is a rare example of a celebrity who has more-or-less defended his controversial actions. That being said, as mentioned above, this newly-surfaced interview may have occurred before Trump's maligned immigration ban and other controversial decisions.
