Julia Louis-Dreyfus calls out Donald Trump, pays tribute to her immigrant father at 2017 SAG Awards

When Julia Louis-Dreyfus took the stage at Sunday night's 207 Screen Actors Guild Awards to accept the award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series, she took the opportunity to slam President Donald Trump.

The "Veep" actress opened her acceptance speech by paying tribute to her late father, who passed away last September right before the 2016 Emmy Awards.

"I am the daughter of an immigrant," she said. "My father fled religious persecution in Nazi-occupied France, and I am an American patriot and I love this country. And, because I love this country, I am horrified by his blemishes -- and this immigrant ban is a blemish -- I am horrified."

The 56-year-old comedian, who was accepting her third SAG Award for her starring turn on "Veep," then read a statement that had been issued earlier in the day by the Writers' Guild of America (WGA) that she was "in complete agreement with."

Read that statement, in full, below:

"The Writers Guilds of America, East and West condemn Donald Trump's profoundly un-American 'Muslim ban,' and applaud the Federal Court's decision to grant a stay that will keep those being held at American airports from being forcibly returned to their countries. Human rights – including the freedoms of speech and religion – are essential to all Americans and to all who come here to build better lives. We are especially troubled by reports that Asghar Farhadi, director of The Salesman, which won Best Screenplay at Cannes and is now nominated for an Oscar, may together with his cast and crew be prevented from entering our country. From its early days, the entertainment industry has been built by the imagination of immigrants. Our guilds are unions of storytellers who have always welcomed those from other nations, and of varying beliefs, who wish to share their creativity with America. We are grateful to them, we stand with them, we will fight for them."

Louis-Dreyfus' stand was just one of many political statements that actors made on Sunday night at the SAG Awards as they took the stage to accept their awards. Other stars like Ashton Kutcher, Mahershala Ali and John Krasinski issued politically-inclined statements as President Donald Trump's Muslim ban cast a shadow over the otherwise celebratory evening.
