'Hidden Figures' dethrones 'Rogue One' with $22.8 million weekend

"Hidden Figures" managed to slide by "Rogue One" at the box office with $22.8 million, Monday's estimates show.

On Sunday, the "Star Wars" prequel (playing in 4,157 locations) and the Fox drama (playing in 2,471 locations) had finished a neck-and-neck race with "Rogue One" coming out on top by $200,000. Now, estimates show that "Hidden Figures" pulled ahead by about $1 million.

Fox and Chernin Entertainment's film starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae follows the story of three female mathematicians at NASA during the 1960s who helped launch John Glenn into orbit. The film, with a budget of $25 million, has a CinemaScore of A+ and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93 percent.

"Rogue One" had a stellar run at the box office, taking first place for three consecutive weeks since it debuted on Dec. 16. So far, it has earned $477.3 million domestically and is soon expected to cross the $500 million mark.

Over the weekend, the movie starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna and Riz Ahmed opened in China to $31 million, bringing the film's offshore total to 437.1 million and $914.4 million globally.

Universal and Illumination Entertainment's "Sing" came in third place this weekend, crossing the $200 million threshold at the domestic box office after raking in $19.6 million. In North America, the animated film has earned $213.4 million in total.

Screen Gems' "Underworld: Blood Wars" took fourth place with a cumulative gross of $13.1 million. In the film, Kate Beckinsale reprises her role as Serene, while Theo James, Lara Pulver, Tobias Menzies, Charles Dance and Bradley James costar in the Anna Foerster-directed film. Overseas, the film took in $45 million with numerous markets still open.

This weekend also marked the expansion of Focus Features' "A Monster Calls," starring Felicity Jones and Sigourney Weaver. The film grossed $2 million this weekend from 1,500 U.S. theaters. The film has a CinemaScore of A and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87 percent.
