Gigi Hadid apologizes for Melania Trump skit at AMAs

Gigi Hadid has offered a handwritten apology for anyone she offended with her impersonation of Melania Trump during the telecast of the American Music Awards.

Hadid and her co-host Jay Pharoah called out president-Elect Donald Trump and wife Melania in their opening monologue for Sunday night's ceremony. At one stage, Hadid poked fun at Mrs. Trump's RNC speech by pursing her lips and saying in an accented voice, "I love my husband, President Barack Obama and our children, Sasha and Malia."

Many viewers back home, however, didn't see the funny side. The supermodel took heat on social media for the gag, which some deemed as racist.

"I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent," she wrote in a message posted to Twitter.

"I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions, and was able to find the humor in it," she added. "I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I offended and have only the best wishes for our country."
