Tucker Carlson said to get nightly show on Fox News channel

Updated

Tucker Carlson is believed to be getting his own solo hour on Fox News Channel, one of the bigger programming decisions made at the cable-news outlet since the departure of its former chief, Roger Ailes.

The conservative commentator, who was once famously scolded by Jon Stewart while co-hosting an episode of CNN"s "Crossfire," is in final-stage talks to take over as anchor of Fox News' 7 p.m. hour, according to a report by The Los Angeles Times. The hour had previously been anchored byGreta Van Susteren, who left the 21st Century Fox-owned network after a contract dispute. Carlson's tenure could start as soon as November 14.

A Fox News Channel spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

Carlson is a cable-news veteran who has hosted programs on MSNBC as well as CNN. He has been a Fox News contributor since 2009 and is a co-host of the weekend edition of "Fox & Friends."

The hiring underscores recent comments by members of the Murdoch family, who control 21st Cenury Fox, noting that Fox News is not backing away from opinion programs that back conservative philosophies in the post-Ailes era.

More to come....
