Daya dishes on her new album, her must-have on tour and double standards

Updated

At just 17 years old, Daya is proving she's a force to be reckoned with.

After an incredible breakout year with three top 40 hits under her belt and a smash collaboration with The Chainsmokers, the singer debuted her album "Sit Still, Look Pretty" and AOL Entertainment was there to catch all the excitement.

"My new album is something that I've been working on for so long, for about a year-and-half now," she revealed. "It focuses on so many things like youth, self-development, and empowerment."

Empowerment indeed. The signer took the stage and got the party started with her hit single "Don't Let Me Down," showcasing her mad vocals and collaboration with the DJ duo.

"My parents were very encouraging to pursue our dreams," Daya said. Growing up with a family of four sisters, Daya's parents always made sure the girls knew they could do anything they put their minds to -- especially when it comes to double standards.

"We kinda just knew from the get-go that we can really do anything that guys can," said the singer. "I just want to get that message out there, to other young girls out there because it's really important to me."

With her platinum hits "Hide Away" and "Sit Still, Look Pretty" the Pittsburg native is proving to be a major threat in the electro-pop world, with her own tour across the U.S. next year.

But the one thing she must have in her dressing room while on tour?

"I always have to eat a plateful of mashed potatoes," Daya laughed. "It helps me, I always crave it before my shows."

Daya, we'll have a plateful of mashed potatoes with you anytime.
