It takes a giant to follow up monumental performances by the likes of J. Cole, Chance the Rapper and Kygo. But the fans at the inaugural Meadows Music & Arts Festival were preparing for a supergiant to leave his footprint on Citi Field.
That supergiant – who is possibly music's biggest ego and definitely music's biggest superstar – was Kanye West, who was the final headliner of the festival.
Signs of his coming arrival were obvious from when the festival gates opened up. From the legions of fans waiting patiently to trade their dollars for his Saint Pablo Tour shirts in a line that seemed to go on forever to the giant cutouts of his and Kim Kardashian's faces watching over the masses, it was clear that West was the weekend's main attraction.
After two days of anticipation, West, known for his his unabashed on-stage dialogues and larger than life performances, finally took the stage. He opened his set with crowd-pleaser "Father Stretch My Hands" synced to a theatrical fireworks display.
Thousands of fans, including Jaden Smith, gathered at the main stage as West performed cuts from his latest "The Life of Pablo" album, as well as hits spanning in his career. But things took a turn for the worst when he began singing "Heartless". "I'm sorry. There's a family emergency. I have to stop the show," West announced mid-song, ending his set 45 minutes in.
Swarms of fans were left in confusion as they were guided out of the venue. News later broke that it was because Kim Kardashain West had been robbed at gunpoint in Paris.
Fans have since calmed since the couple reunited safely in New York. While they may not have gotten a full Kanye West concert, for a brief moment they caught a rare glimpse of the human side to the music giant.
