Mariah Carey shares tense sneak peek of her 'Empire' appearance

Mariah Carey is a natural on camera.

The 46-year-old singer teased her highly anticipated guest stint on Empireon Monday, in which she sings in the studio with Jussie Smollett (Jamal). But things aren't going well to say the least -- clad in a sparkly bodysuit and a black choker, Carey comforts Smollett as he appears to be on the edge of a breakdown.

The new clip also features the original song "Infamous," which the legendary diva recorded with other cast members specifically for the hit show.

"Here's a sneak peek of my appearance on #Empire, airing on Wednesday and featuring #Infamous with @jussiesmollett!" Carey tweeted.

The mother of two plays a superstar singer named Kitty during her appearance, which shouldn't be too much of a stretch for the GRAMMY-winning songstress. Empire co-creator Lee Daniels has cast Carey in a number of projects in his past, most memorably in 2009's Precious, in which Carey ditched all the makeup and glamour to play a welfare caseworker.

"She was great," Empire star Taraji P. Henson revealed during the show's panel at Fox's Television Critics Association press day in August. "She's fabulous. She's beautiful to look at. I'd like to wear a leotard like that!"

"She brings a sense of what Mariah brings to the music industry, she brought it to our show," she added. "I'm grateful that she spent time with little old us."

Smollett is also clearly a big fan.

"I love her," he gushed to ET exclusively last month. "It's different getting to know someone that you love and respect and being able to work and do the work with that someone."
