Kiefer Sutherland reveals why Julia Roberts ended their engagement in 1991

Kiefer Sutherland is opening up about his terminated engagement to Julia Roberts, whom he says he was "very much in love" with.

The stars met on the set of the 1990 flick "Flatliners," and subsequently got engaged. They were set to wed during the summer of 1991 before Roberts suddenly called off the wedding, and now we know what happened.

"We were young and we were both very much in love," Sutherland told People magazine's Jess Cagle during a recent edition of "The Jess Cagle Interview," which you can watch above. "We had decided we wanted to get married, but then this other thing kind of took over. She was arguably the most famous woman in the world, and this wedding that was supposed to be something between the two of us became something so big."

He's right: Dubbed "America's sweetheart," Roberts was the biggest female movie star in the world during that time, with an entire world of people watching her every move. Her wedding would've turned into a media circus.

"Then, in the middle of that, I think she had the courage -- it wasn't what she wanted to do in the end," he continued to tell Cagle. "I think it took a lot of courage, even amongst all of that other stuff, to be able to say, 'I can't do this.'"

While he reflected on his relationship with the movie star, who has been married to director Daniel Moder for 12 years, Sutherland seemed to have nothing but good things to say about her. After all, their love was one shared between two young actors who weren't really sure what they wanted. At the end of the day, Sutherland appeared to respect her decision.

"I think she was being realistic for herself," the 49-year-old actor concluded. "I think that's much better."
