Neal McCoy drops new album, 'You Don't Know Me' filled with American classics

Neal McCoy might be best known for his country hits like "The Shake" and "They're Playin' Our Song" but the 58-year-old singer has gone in a completely new direction for his new album, "You Don't Me," which features sets from the American songbook.

"I have always been a big fan of this [style of] music. My mom and dad listened to a lot of this music as I was growing up as a kid. This album has been on my bucket list as long as I can remember," McCoy said in an exclusive interview with AOL.

"I feel to sing this kind of music, you really have to be able to interpret, phrase and deliver what the writer was trying to say. Not only are the lyrics wonderful but the chord progressions are really something special."

McCoy teamed up with Grammy Award winner and producer Steve Tyrell on this project and the album's set list includes favorites like "Unforgettable" and "Dream a Little Dream." It's not a huge surprise that McCoy took a break from his classic country hits to pay homage to some of the greats -- he's been a fan since he was a kid.

"I'm a big Sinatra fan, but there were a slew of great singers like Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, just to name a few," McCoy said of his childhood favorites.

In fact, he can remember the first song in this genre he ever heard and it still brings back fond memories and was a big reason he wanted to put together this album.

"One of the first songs of this era, I remember my mother singing to me as a child, 'Long Long Time.' That's the main reason it was my first choice as a definite for this project!"
