Nina Dobrev on how the new 'xXx' film empowers women

Nina Dobrev stopped by BUILD Series NYC to dish on her role in the film "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" where she plays Becky Clearidge.

From pranks on set ("Ruby Rose covered my trailer with 200 headshots of herself.") to flashing someone on a Men's Health magazine shoot ("sorry ... or you're welcome?"), there was never a dull moment with Nina in the studio. She even played a which-Vin-Diesel-character-said-this game with moderator Leigh Blickley. The actress had lots to say about show business, but her passion was truly shined when discussing the way women are portrayed on screen. Dobrev was delighted to share her character Becky was written as an intelligent woman "that reflects the world we live in."

"One of the things that drew me to the [script] was the female aspect of it. I mean, [Toni Collette] is not on the poster, but the three of us are and then there's Toni. There's so many strong female characters in action movie, which we don't see very often," Dobrev said.

"The women in this film, they are beautiful but that's not what defines them," Nina continued. "They don't fight with each other. I mean, there is a little bit of conflict. By the end of the film, one of my favorite themes is that they end up learning that they need one another. They're stronger if they build each other up and work together. I think that's such an important message for not only women but for girls watching this film."

Another film this year, "Hidden Figures," also portrays educated women on screen.

In comparing her role as Becky to "Hidden Figures," another film with strong roles for women, Nina reiterated what portraying Becky in "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" meant to her. "There are women that go to MIT and join the NSA and are in very high positions in the government and are very smart. I'm happy that I got to play one and reflect that on film."
