People's Choice Awards 2017: Jennifer Lopez wore a basic hair tie in her ponytail because she's a queen

Anytime Jennifer Lopez and an awards show are involved, you can expect there to be some serious slayage. That's just basic red carpet math. (And the result of some well-placed highlighter—what human has those cheekbones?) So, if we were here to say that tonight at the 2017 People's Choice Awards Jennifer Lopez looked fantastic, we're pretty sure the response would be "duh."

Instead, we're here to talk about her ponytail. Not because it wasn't just any old ponytail, but because it was. J.Lo literally wore her hair tied back with the same crappy dollar store hair elastic you probably have on your wrist at this very moment. You know, that one you "borrowed" from a friend.

Take a closer look:

Really, it deserves a close up, because I actually had to zoom in tight to confirm that, yup, this indeed wasn't some bobby pin magic or hair wrap sorcery celebrity stylists are known for. This is the hair tie you steal from SoulCycle and hide in the bottom of your bag. And damn she makes it look good.

Now, if you've ever read a beauty site (which we're assuming yes, since hi, hey, here you are!), you've likely come across a dozen of stories talking about all the ways you can make a ponytail un-boring. There's barrettes! Bobby pins! Bows! You can wrap them, you can cuff them, heck you can even belt them. Each of which are great, because a girl's got to have her options. Sometimes you want to switch it up. But that shouldn't come at the expense of feeling like a basic hair tie = giving up. And J.Lo, the humble queen she is, is here to prove that.

Sure, her stylist did make the effort to use a tie that matched her hair color—unlike the bright hot pink one I've been wearing all week since I lost all my others ¯\(ツ)/¯. The style itself is also slick and sleek, and we're sure a handful of products and time went into getting it perfect. (We'll report back once we get the full details.) But this is a fundamentally huge win for the lowly, overlooked hair elastic, and we're here for it.

Here's to rolling up to work tomorrow wearing the "J.Lo"—even if our uniforms are Forever21 and not Reem Acra.
