Man receives $128 ticket for warming up his car

A way drivers try to combat the winter chill is to leave their car running to warm it up -- but in some places, that can result in a ticket. One Michigan man learned this the hard way and couldn't help but share it.

Taylor Trupiano was shocked when he discovered he was issued a ticket for warming up his car in his driveway. He posted a photo of the ticket on Facebook and did not hold back his disdain:

"Let's all take a moment to thank officer ... K. Keary for wasting the taxpayer's money and giving me a ticket for warming up my car in my own damn driveway," he wrote. The angry post went viral, getting thousands of comments and shares.

Trupiano received the ticket for leaving his keys in his ignition unattended -- which is something he said Michigan residents do all the time.

"I thought it was some kind of joke at first, and then I was thrown back by it," Trupiano told local news outlet WXYZ. "I was really surprised."

"I was in and out in probably about 7-8 minutes," he said. "So in that amount of time he ran up here, gave me a ticket and by the time I got out he was nowhere to be seen."

The state of Michigan doesn't have a law about this, but there are several local ordinances. Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said it's to help the driver, not hurt him.

"We have five to ten cars stolen this way every winter," he told WXYZ. "It's dangerous, and of course it drives everyone's insurance rates up. It drives our crime rates up."
