Most searched for celebrities on Google in 2016 revealed

Updated

Google released its annual Year in Search roundup of the most searched for celebrities for 2016 this week, and it features just as many predictably big names as it does surprising lesser-known stars.

The list, which is broken down by category into actors, actresses and music acts, is an accurate reflection of what trended the highest over the past 12 months around the world. Lists are also available for categories like politics, sports and travel.

In Hollywood, it seems as though actors and actresses' love lives drove a significant portion of traffic this year. Brad Pitt topped the list of most searched actors, which is probably just as much thanks to his divorce from Angelina Jolie as his starring role in "Allied" was. No. 2 on the list, Tom Hiddleston, likewise has his high position on the list due to his short-lived -- but much talked-about -- relationship with Taylor Swift.

Meghan Markle was the No. 1 searched actress this year. The "Suits" star probably has her relationship with Prince Harry to thank for that, as she instantly became a household name this fall when news of their romance broke.

On the music side, it was all about Beyoncé in 2016, whose visual album Lemonade was a viral sensation. Beck With The Good Hair, anyone? Also on the list is Grace Vanderwaal, whose stunning performances on "America's Got Talent" week after week garnered her near constant buzz this summer.
