Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary

Happy wedding anniversary to Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh!

The happy couple are celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary today, November 20, and seem just as happy now as they did when they first got hitched at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. The couple at the time were known as Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten and were married in an impressive ceremony at the Abbey. Elizabeth was just 21 years old and her fiancé had just returned from serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War.

The couple will reportedly celebrate the anniversary at their home, Windsor Castle. It's been a busy year of milestones for the pair. Queen Elizabeth, who turned 90 this year, celebrated her birthday with a large bash while her husband celebrated his 95th birthday. The two are the longest living royals in British history and are set to celebrate their milestone 70th anniversary next year.

When the couple first met officially, Queen Elizabeth was reportedly taken with the handsome and dashing Mountbatten. They were distant cousins who had spent much of their youth in the same social circles, but it was at an outing at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon, that the then 18-year-old Philip caught her eye. It was said to have been love at first sight.

The two went on to marry eight years later and have four children, Charles, Anne, Edward and Andrew.

On their golden anniversary Queen Elizabeth commented that her husband has been a constant in her life. "He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years."
