The answer to who gets the armrest in the middle plane seat

Airline travel used to be the height of glamour. Even if you were seated in coach, the experience was special.

Granted, it was also smoky from all the cigarettes that were allowed on board, but we don't miss that.

However, back then, airplanes didn't have a dreaded middle seat.

Airplanes are now designed to fit the most people on a flight providing bigger profit margins. Some say one of the worst things that can happen to a passenger is to be stuck in the middle.

You don't have a window, you don't have the aisle and you are trapped between two strangers 40,000 feet above the earth. The conditions are less than optimal. To make it all worse, you don't know which armrest is yours.

Flight attendants often get caught in the middle of these arguments, but they also have thoughts on how to solve the problem.

One flight attendant, Debbie Ferm, said, "I think the person on each side has an entire armrest to themselves, so they are obligated to follow the lead of the person in the middle seat.

Others believe you should share the armrest. There should be a general agreement where one person uses the front and the other uses the back.

There's another awkward scenario at play here, though: what if your arms touch?

Some think you should just use common sense. If a passenger needs the armrest, let them use it.

Maybe airlines should just start assigning the armrests like they do the chairs.

Better yet, they could do their favorite thing and add it as an upgrade for a fee.
