Vernon Kifer, camera operator on 'Friends,' dies at 63

Vernon Kifer, a veteran camera operator who worked on such sitcoms as Friends, Mike & Molly and Veronica's Closet, has died. He was 63.

According to a report from the Los Angeles County coroner's office, Kifer was found dead Oct. 16 in his residence. Friends said he had an apartment in Glendale, Calif. No cause of death was available.

Kifer was with Friends during its entire 10-season run, shooting 187 of the series' 236 episodes, including the first one and the last, according to IMDb. He also did 46 episodes of Joey, the spinoff that starred Matt LeBlanc.

A sitcom specialist, Kifer also worked on Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show, Cybill, Men Behaving Badly, Will & Grace, Delta, True Jackson, VP, Three Sisters and the 1996 pilot for Spin City.

Kifer received a "reference camera technician" credit on James Cameron's Avatar (2009) and most recently worked on a February episode of Girl Meets World and on a pilot for NBC.

A native of Canonsburg, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Kifer attended Whittier High School in California and then San Diego State before working as a director and cinematographer at KPBS, a public TV station in San Diego.

He was a member of the International Cinematographers Guild and Society of Camera Operators and an astronomy buff.
