Model gets eye infection from dirty makeup brushes

We get it — washing dirty makeup brushes probably isn't your idea of fun. In fact, we frequently go out of our way to avoid doing it whenever possible. Tactics we've developed over the years include resorting to applying everything with our fingers, giving brushes a quick swipe on tissues, or just stocking up on more. Well, we're here to say now that when faced with dirty brushes, we're going to start cleaning them properly. Common sense will tell you that dirt, oils, and old makeup will all build up on those bristles and could break you out — but that's definitely not the worst of it. Recently, Australian model Anthea Page discovered the extreme effects of unhygienic brush care, Sugarscape reports. The consequences? A staph infection.

Anthea penned an open letter to MUAs and makeup lovers everywhere on her Instagram, explaining that she contracted the eye infection after dirty brushes were used on-set at a shoot. "If you are getting your makeup done or using any testers, check everything has been cleaned to your standard even if someone scoffs at your concerns," she wrote. "This is not my first time receiving an ailment from a dirty makeup brush." As wake-up calls go, this one definitely caught our attention! Whether you're testing a brush at Sephora or using one of your own, remember to keep things clean. A little brush cleaner (or even shampoo!) and warm water are really all you need. And while we're never exactly going to enjoy washing our brushes, we'll gladly add it to our chores if it means escaping an eye infection. That one's a definite no-brainer.
