Legends surround the Chocolate Hills of Bohol in the Philippines

Updated

This unusual formation of hills is found on an island in the Philippines.

It's called the Chocolate Hills of Bohol because during the dry season, the grass turns brown and looks like mounds of chocolate.

Many legends also surround the Chocolate Hills of Bohol.

One popular tale involves a giant falling in love with a mortal woman, and when she died, his teardrops turned into the hills.

There isn't an exact number of how many hills there are, but people estimate as many as 1,776.

Scientists have differing views about how the hills formed including limestone piling up on top of a clay base.

You can visit the hills year around but don't expect to go climbing each and every one -- at all of the chocolate hills from a distance.
