US Defense Department: Guantanamo detainee released to Mauritania

WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - An inmate at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has been released to the government of Mauritania, the U.S. Defense Department said on Monday, bringing down to 60 the number of prisoners held at the facility set up after the Sept. 11 attacks to hold terrorism suspects.

Mohamedou Ould Slahi was released after a review board in July determined his continued detention was not necessary to protect against a threat to U.S. Security, the department said in a statement. (Reporting by Mohammad Zargham; Editing by Chris Reese)
