'Girl On The Train' star Justin Theroux reveals how he chooses the roles he takes on

Justin Theroux's character in "The Girl On The Train," Tom Watson, may not be who he seems to be, and that's exactly what attracted the actor to the role.

Actually, that's what attracts him to every single role that he takes on.

"It's what attracts me to any role: There's what people present, and then there's who they really are," he explained exclusively to AOL when we sat down with him last week.

Theroux, who says his character considers himself to be a "victim of circumstance" who has made a series of "terrible decisions," actually read Tate Taylor's script before reading the Paula Hawkins best-seller it was based on. Regardless, though, he thinks that both versions of the story share the same tone and rip the illusion of perfect suburban lives apart.

And he hopes that audiences experience that thrill when they see the film, which opens nationwide on Oct. 7.

"I hope that they go on a ride," he explained with a grin. "No pun intended."
