The EU is about to give all teenagers a free month of unlimited travel

Ask any millennial the top five things they wish they had enough money to do and you're pretty much guaranteed to hear the word 'travel.'

But that's precisely the issue – traveling costs money, and most millennials don't make enough to just up and leave the country to follow their dreams of wanderlust.

But the European Union might have a way of making that possible.

The EU has proposed to give all teenagers in the union a 407 euro (roughly $456) rail pass when they turn 18, giving them a month of free travel anywhere around the continent of Europe.

The official proposal states the motivation behind this idea, saying:

"The mobility of young people is essential in promoting a sense of belonging to Europe. Such a program would give all young people, regardless of their social or educational background, the opportunity to discover Europe's diversity."

Getting millennials and the European youth to fall back in love with the continent is crucial to keep nationalism and union alive among the countries, especially after Brexit earlier this year.

Similarly to supporters of the now almost commonplace American tradition of studying abroad while in college, advocates of the EU travel pass know that physically traveling to and exploring another city or country is the only way to gain invaluable experience while you're still young and able to.

The EU is hopeful this will help get its citizens excited about exploring and experiencing as many parts of their continent as possible.

As the top transport official for the European Union, Violeta Bulc, said to European Parliament:

"We admire the boldness and the level of ambition and we are ready to explore further."
