Colossal wasp's nest found in attic contained up to 10,000 insects

Home renovators in Northamptonshire, England, recently became aware of one very unwanted addition to their new house -- a MASSIVE wasps nest in the attic.

The nest was discovered by pest controllers treating an established woodworm problem prior to the new owners moving in, according to The Northampton Chronicle.

The wasps had reportedly built a 4.5 foot tunnel from the outside of the house into the attic where the 3.2 foot wide nest was located, all constructed out of tree bark and material from fences near the house.

Talk about handy work.

A local pest controller estimated the nest could have been home to as many as 10,000 wasps, compared to an average nest that houses about 3,000 of the insects.

Luckily for the home owners and pest control team, the wasps were believed to have abandoned the nest about a year prior to its discovery, according to BBC.

Pest controller Gary Wilkinson said there was not one wasp alive inside the nest when they found it.

"We'd certainly not be that close to something that size -- even in a bee suit -- if we thought it was still being used," Wilkinson said.
