LeBron James reveals whether he'll stand for the national anthem

Updated

LeBron James gave his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick's protest during the national anthem Monday afternoon.

Many have wondered whether NBA superstars like LeBron James and Steph Curry would be following in the footsteps of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has been kneeling during the national anthem ahead of his games to protest racial injustice. James, it turns out, will not be.

James, on Monday, made it clear that he will stand for the national anthem, but added that he respects what Kaepernick is doing. He noted that it's important for people to be able to express themselves in a "peaceful" manner.

Here's the quote:

"I'm all in favor of anyone, athlete or non-athlete, being able to express what they believe in in a peaceful manner and that's exactly what Colin Kaepernick is doing and I respect that. I think you guys know that when I'm passionate about something, I speak up on it. Standing for the national anthem is something I will do. That's who I am. That's what I believe in. But that doesn't mean that I don't respect and don't agree with what Colin Kaepernick is doing."

"You have the right to voice your opinion and stand for your opinion and he's doing it in the most peaceful way I've ever seen someone do something. What I do not like about the situation is the negative attention that has been thrown upon him from certain people. It's not deserved. He was very educated, very smart, very candid and very demanding about what he wanted to do. He didn't ask anyone else to join him."

It's likely that some NBA players will join Kaepernick in his protest when the season resumes – but we now know that James won't be one of them.
