Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan are spending $3B to cure all disease, naturally

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have already vowed to give away 99 percent of their earnings to charity.

Just last week, an earnings report was released that showed that the couple has donated $258M to date.

In the latest update in the Chan-Zuckerberg donation story comes this: The couple is now pledging to donate upwards of $3B to work on curing diseases.

Chan, who's a pediatrician at San Francisco General Hospital, said Wednesday at an event for the Chan-Zuckerberg initiative (the couple's philanthropic network):

"Can we work together to cure, prevent or manage all disease within our children's lifetime? Mark and I believe that this is possible."

Zuckerberg and Chan will begin with a massive $600M donation to Biohub, a San Francisco research facility that will help develop tools in treating disease by initiating collaboration between scientists from UC San Francisco, Stanford University and UC Berkley.

Bloomberg elaborates:

"The couple plans to work with scientists, doctors, engineers and universities to achieve their goal, in part by building tools and technology."

The position of President of Science of the couple's project will be Neurobiologist Cori Bergmann.

Zuckerberg knows, however, the road ahead is long and the couple's goals won't be met overnight:

"This is a big goal and we thought this was really aggressive when we got started. But when you get into it, one of the first things that strikes you is medicine has only been a modern science for about a century... it's going to be years before the first tools get built, and years after that before they actually get used to cure diseases."

However, the couple knows that it is possible.

Chan boldly affirmed:

"[Mark and I] set a goal: Can we cure all diseases in our children's lifetime? That doesn't mean that no one will ever get sick. But it does mean that our children and their children should get sick a lot less. And that we should be able to detect and treat or at least manage it as an ongoing condition."

We can't wait to see the leaps and bounds the couple makes in as time progresses – we're definitely hitting the 'like' button on this initiative!
