World's most popular theme parks you probably don't know about

Updated

Florida is indisputably Mecca for theme park enthusiasts.

Five of the top 10 most attended theme parks last year were located in the Sunshine State, according to the 2015 Global Attractions Attendance Report, conducted by AECOM and Themed Entertainment Association (TEA). Disney's Magic Kingdom came out on top with 20,492,000 visitors. Anaheim's Disneyland came in a close second with 18,278,000 revelers last year.

Even the most casual thrill seeker would be unsurprised to learn that Disney and Universal dominated the top 12, thanks, in part, to their international locations in Tokyo and Paris.

Things start to get interesting, however, as the list goes on.

The second-oldest theme park in the world, Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, nearly beat SeaWorld Florida with 4,733,000 guests. Meanwhile, visitation to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China surged 36 percent in one year to 7,486,000 people. Chimelong is now closing in on Universal's Islands of Adventure, despite the popularity of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

In fact, if one were to ignore parks the run by the big guys (Disney, Universal, Six Flags, SeaWorld, etc.), there are tons of other options loved by millions around the world. And the far-flung locations mean you get to exercise your passport while crossing off your bucket list.
