Unexpected, wild and outrageous moments from the 2016 Emmy Awards

Updated

The Emmy Awards are no stranger to wild and unexpected moments. The award show on Sunday, highlighting the best in television, brought us some of the funniest, wildest, OMG! moments of the year with stomach-busting one-liners, to Jimmy Kimmel's hilarious openers to wildly sexy fashions.

Check out our favorite OMG! moments below:

1. Jimmy Kimmel's video montage gets a surprise appearance from... : Before he got into his monologue, Kimmel kicked things off for the Emmys with a video-montage where he was "trying to get to the Emmy Awards" by hitching a ride with everyone in showbiz. First Kimmel hopped into the white Bronco with O.J. Simpson, then the "Modern Family" cast gave him a ride, then he tried to sneak into the motorcade with the "Veep" stars and lastly he rode in on a dragon with Daenerys Targaryen. But it was Jeb Bush who stole the show. The former 2016 presidential candidate told Kimmel he had to get a job driving the motorcade because business was slow, clearly teasing himself. And at one point he joked to Kimmel, " Shave that beard off your face you godless, heartless hippie."

2. Kimmel's cutthroat Emmy's monologue: Nobody was safe! Kimmel joked about who Travolta would thank if he won tonight since clearly he owes everything to O.J. Simpson. He teased the lack of diversity by asking all the black actors to hug the white ones. He lambasted "Celebrity Apprentice" creator Mark Burnett for bringing Donald Trump to reality television, joking that if Trump gets elected, the first person to be thrown over the border wall would be Burnett. It was a rip-roaring good time for an open.

3. Surprise! Kelly Preston is a brunette now: John Travolta's leading lady was nearly unrecognizable when she hit the Emmy's red carpet with dark brunette locks. The always-blonde star definitely had one of the most unexpected beauty looks of the evening with her dark hairdo.

4. Julia Louis-Dreyfus broke down in tears: The "Veep" star won the Emmy Award for Lead Actress in a Comedy and she broke down in tears as she dedicated the award to her father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday. The actress could barely get through her speech and her hand began to shake as she told the audience, "I dedicate this to my father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday. I am so glad that he liked me, because his opinion was the one that really mattered."

5. Red and white dresses dominate the red carpet: Talk about a fashion surprise. Half of the leading ladies of the evening rocked either white or red on the red carpet and looked ravishing. Some of the best-dressed looks of the evening went to Julie Bowen and Heidi Klum in white and Priyanka Chopra in red.

6.Matt Damon crashes the Emmys: Damon and Jimmy Kimmel have had a long-standing feud and after Kimmel lost out on the Emmy for Best Variety show, Damon made sure to crash the Emmys and rub it in his face. He took the stage and joked to Kimmel that was a "big loser." They bantered back and forth with Damon chewing on an apple the whole time. As Damon was leaving the stage he yelled to Kimmel, "Tell your mom, how about them apples!" Mic drop.

7. Jimmy Kimmel's mom provides snacks: The Emmy host didn't want anyone to go hungry, so he enlisted the help of his mom to make the whole audience peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Mrs. Kimmel said she whipped up about 7,000 sandwiches and Kimmel enlisted the help of the "Stranger Things" kids to ride around on their bikes and pass them out. Nicely done.

8."Game of Thrones" sets a record: The popular HBO show took home Outstanding Drama Series for the second year in a row and is now the most-awarded scripted series in Emmy history with 38 wins.

9. Kimmel tries to take back Maggie Smith's Emmy Award: In the beginning of the show, Kimmel said that they needed to stop handing out awards to people who didn't show up. He pinpointed British actress, Maggie Smith, who has won for her role on "Downton Abbey" before, but never crosses the pond to get the award. This year, Smith won an Emmy for "Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series" and Kimmel wasn't having it. He took the award and yelled, "I'm mailing this to her. Maggie if you want this, it will be in the lost and found."

10. Sarah Paulson scores Emmy win -- and there's a fun fact: Paulson took home the Emmy for her portrayal of lawyer Marcia Clark in "The People v. O.J. Simpson" and she emotionally thanked everyone for the award. She thanked her girlfriend Holland Taylor and of course, Marcia, who was in the audience. The fun fact? Paulson is the 5th person in the past decade to win Lead Actress in a Limited Series for playing a real person.

11: Celebs bring surprising dates: Sarah Paulson is nominated for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in "The People v. O.J. Simpson" and she made sure to remind everyone of that when she brought the famous lawyer as her date to the award show. Liev Schreiber also brought a fun date to the Emmys -- his 9-year-old son Sasha. Too cute!
