7 things you definitely didn't know about Ikea

You'd be hard-pressed to find a person who hasn't owned a single piece of Ikea furniture in her lifetime. But for how popular the home decor giant is, how much do you really know about the company itself—besides the facts that its furniture is cheap, its instructions are infuriating, and its Swedish meatballs are delish? The New York Times recently took a deeper look at the inner workings of Ikea, and what they uncovered is pretty insane. (Even more insane than spending 11 hours putting together a Hemnes dresser.) These are seven of the craziest tidbits.

1. Ikea is one of the world's largest consumers of lumber. They use a whopping 1 percent of the world's commercial wood supply each year. One percent may not sound like a lot, but it equates to 17.8 million cubic yards.

2. It sells a set of its popular Billy bookcases every 10 seconds. Which totals more than 3 million Billys sold each year.

3. In 2015, 884 million people visited an Ikea. That's more than double the population of the United States.

4. One in ten Europeans is conceived in an Ikea bed. Is there something about putting together a bajillion pieces with only illustrations to guide you that makes people want to get it on?

5. Speaking of Ikea's assembly instructions, there's an entire web series dedicated to the often-frustrating process. It's called "Hikea", and features people attempting to put together Ikea products under the influence. (LOL)

6. Part of the reason Ikea is so popular? (Besides price.) They do an enormous amount of research. For the past three years, the company has surveyed 12,000 people in 12 cities to understand how they exist and interact with items in their home, the NYT reports.

7. Kanye West wants to design for them. He recently said in an interview with BBC: "Yo, Ikea, allow Kanye to create, allow him to make this thing because you know what? I want a bed that he makes, I want a chair that he makes."
