Paris. London. Or maybe even Miami and Seattle. The thoughts of visiting a new city can be so exciting that we often forget basic safety tips that will make you and your loved ones feel more confident about leaving home.

Documenting your trip on social media isn't enough. Leave a detailed itinerary with a couple of close friends or family members, so that someone knows where you are at all times.

Before you go overseas, register with the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. STEP will get you in contact with the closest U.S. Embassy and allow for faster assistance in case of a natural disaster or civil unrest.

Some drivers might offer a lower rate, but be smart and stick with licensed taxis and car services to get you around. And don't forget to buckle up! Traffic may be more aggressive than you are used to at home.

Be sure to read the hotel's emergency escape route. You'll be grateful you looked at the sign posted on the back of your room's door if an emergency arises in the middle of the night.

Finally, 911 doesn't work everywhere in the world. Find out the emergency numbers for the country you are visiting.
